Field Guide

to the small things hidden in the eight

these are clues, not solutions. spoilers refuse to be spoilers.

I · 01

The Cartographer of Lost Maps

step through the door →
  • some cities will not name themselves until you have stood beside them for a moment.
  • the leviathan does not move; the isle does. count the islands twice.
  • the cartouche signs itself, but only when the page is already mostly drawn.
  • the south-east is faintly busier than the north-west. trust your candle.
II · 02

The Surgeon of Wasted Hours

step through the door →
  • noon is a tendon. it should not be cut without intention.
  • 23:58 has been listening for a flatline since the operation began.
  • two of the embedded moments are meetings. excise both, and a sentence becomes legible.
  • the keys R and F have been taught a different surgical vocabulary.
III · 03

The Botanist of Glass Gardens

step through the door →
  • some leaves take seventy seconds to unfurl. some take longer.
  • after every plant has bloomed, a seventh sometimes finds its own seed.
  • the garden does not punish movement; it simply does not reward it.
  • names are written in latin, but only after the plant is fully itself.
IV · 04

The Architect of Forgotten Buildings

step through the door →
  • the cornice has a gallery behind it, accessible only by patience.
  • a paper bird waits on the demolition porch — for those who have not been hasty.
  • the room that held nothing is, in a sense, the most important room.
  • the architect's confession only surfaces after the visitor has already found something.
V · 05

The Witch of Mirrors and Recursion

step through the door →
  • the witch wishes to be named. it takes four words from you.
  • the four rites are not for you to invent — they are for you to discover the right order.
  • the order is older than the rites: kindle, name, bind, close.
  • visitors who return a second time are remembered.
VI · 06

The Astronomer of Silent Stars

step through the door →
  • at ninety seconds of stillness, one of the constellations names itself.
  • at one hundred and fifty, a planet drags a poem behind it.
  • the eyepiece is not a thing to look through. it is a thing to listen at.
  • the seed is the night. every visitor sees the same sky tonight.
VII · 07

The Engineer of Impossible Machines

step through the door →
  • the belt crosses itself but does not twist. ask why.
  • the flywheel turns at the same speed regardless of the input. ask what powers it.
  • seven full rotations counterclockwise have a side effect. eight is unnecessary.
  • a Certificate of Calibration is awarded to those who break the machine the right way.
VIII · 08

The Weaver of Half-Remembered Songs

step through the door →
  • color is pitch. you have been singing while you wove.
  • seven distinct threads in a single breath gets a hum back.
  • r rings the whole cloth at once. c folds it away.
  • a long, slow stroke settles below the audible into something quieter.

a clue is a courtesy. the dreamers will tell you nothing. their wake logs, however, are honest.
